We get this question a lot: What’s the perfect number of live auction items for a fundraising event?

The truth is, there’s no magic number.

At Kilbreath Events, we believe you’ll always raise more money selling something live. Our fundraising hosts are trained to keep the audience’s attention, sell items in a lively and timely fashion, and make sure guests feel great about giving.

So, what does the data say? In 2025, the average number of live auction items at our events has been 14.5. Last year, that number was 15.5 — and back in 2019, we were averaging 21.3 per event!

When we work with you, we look at what you’ve procured and help determine what belongs in the live auction. The goal is always balance: give guests plenty of chances to spend without causing fatigue.

If you’ve got five fantastic items, that’s great — we’ll make them shine. But if you’ve got 18 solid ones and a generous crowd, let’s sell them all and make the most of it!

At the end of the day, it’s about more than just the auction. The key is to curate a focused, inspiring program that highlights your mission, motivates giving, and keeps things moving. A tight, engaging show means donors stay energized — and your organization raises more money.
