Galas Are Changing… and Honestly, That's a Good Thing

For years, the formula for a fundraising gala was pretty predictable: dinner, speeches, a live auction, paddle raise, dessert, and everyone heads home.

That formula still works—but today's most successful fundraising events are proving that people don't just remember what happened. They remember how the event made them feel.

A recent article in The Chronicle of Philanthropy, "Galas Get a Makeover: It's All About the Vibe" by M.J. Prest (June 2026), explores how nonprofits across the country are reimagining their galas to focus less on tradition and more on creating meaningful experiences. One line from the article especially stood out to me:

"The gala is a relationship-building tool." — M.J. Prest, The Chronicle of Philanthropy

That couldn't be more true.

Fundraising Isn't About Tables. It's About People.

At Kilbreath Events, we often remind our clients that donors rarely leave saying:

"The chicken was excellent."

Instead, they remember things like:

  • "I felt connected to the mission."

  • "That story really moved me."

  • "The room had incredible energy."

  • "We had so much fun!"

  • "I can't wait to come back next year."

Those memories create loyal supporters.

The Vibe Matters

The article shares examples of organizations that are breaking away from the traditional ballroom setup:

  • Lounge-style seating instead of endless banquet tables.

  • Fireside conversations instead of long speeches.

  • More opportunities for guests to mingle and interact.

  • Experiences that feel authentic to the organization's mission rather than simply checking off the "gala" boxes.

None of those ideas are gimmicks.

They're intentional ways to help donors connect emotionally.

Raising More Money Starts Long Before the Paddle Raise

People often ask me what makes a live auction or Fund-a-Need successful.

The answer usually surprises them.

It's not just the auctioneer.

It's everything that happened before the auctioneer ever picked up the microphone.

Did guests feel welcomed?

Did they laugh?

Did they connect with someone new?

Did they understand why their gift matters?

When the answer is yes, generosity follows naturally.

Our Goal at Kilbreath Events

Whether we're producing an intimate nonprofit dinner or a ballroom filled with 800 guests, our objective is always the same:

Create an experience that people talk about long after the event ends.

Because fundraising isn't simply about asking for donations.

It's about building relationships, inspiring generosity, and creating moments that people want to be part of again and again.

And if we can help create a little magic along the way—that's even better.
